Millions of Americans fall prey to identity theft each year, and many of them are left in the dark about how to protect themselves in the future. As a bipartisan bill sponsored by Senators Kyrsten Sinema (D-Arizona) and Charles Grassley (R-IA), the Improving Social Security’s Service for Victims of Identity Theft Act would ensure that the Social Security Administration is adequately prepared to assist victims of identity theft in securing and ensuring access to their retirement benefits.

I am writing in support of the Improving Social Security’s Service to Victims of Identity Theft Act on behalf of AMAC’s more than 2.3 million members. This legislation will make it easier for the Social Security Administration to track the status of identity theft claims filed by the elderly (SSA). It’s wise to have a single point of contact for all identity theft claims, as this is a developing concern.

Identity theft affects millions of Americans each year, with the elderly being disproportionately affected. Act to Improve Customer Service for Victims of Identity Fraud in Social Security seeks both creative and practical ways to improve customer service for victims of identity theft. A single point of contact at the Social Security Administration (SSA) will be allocated to each identity theft victim who requests a new Social Security number under this proposal. This will be especially useful for the elderly, who will no longer have to wade through the SSA’s maze of bureaucratic red tape in order to get their identity theft case resolved. A single, reliable, and approachable case manager is available to answer questions, track the progress of a claim, and assist elders in need.

It is AMAC’s mission to protect the interests of the elderly, and it has done so through promoting measures against Elder Fraud in the past. For this timely and practical answer to help victims of identity theft in their most vulnerable moment, we applaud Senators Sinema, Wyden, Crapo, and Grassley. In support of the Improving Social Security’s Service to Victims of Identity Theft Act, AMAC is happy to provide our complete support.
